  • Microalgae are micro-organisms with the closest biochemical connection to higher plants;
  • Over the past 25 years, greater than 70% of new pharmaceuticals have come from the natural world – with many coming from higher plants;
  • Similarly, the demand for natural product-based bioactives for biopesticides is growing rapidly;
  • A significant number of plant-based bioactives cannot be chemically synthesized due to their complex structures;
  • The development rate for new, plant-based bioactives would be accelerated if sustainable production/manufacturing was not an issue;
