Microalgae are essentially microscopic plants and we apply the same principle underlying non-GM improvement approaches that are used in crop plants to develop new varieties of Chlorella with desirable traits using our directed evolution and careful selection strategies. We use creative selection and high-throughput screening approaches to find the "needles in the haystacks" or winners.


From increasing tolerances to external factors to improving physical traits or nutritional quality, we evolve Chlorella to produce stable new genetic varieties or cultivars to align to market and product needs. We back all of this up with full annotated genomics and proteomics through our world-class bioinformatics, underpinning our commitment to transparency, quality and safety.

Our bioprocess team uses a combination of improvement processes including scale-up and scale-down modelling as well as multifactorial statistical analysis approaches to rapidly co-optimise process conditions – ranging from temperature, carbon source, nitrogen source, pH, salinity, mixing rate and other media composition components. 


Good genetics is a great place to start, but a carefully optimised and improved bioprocess coupled with desirable genetics delivers our final products.
